What is a cocktail shaker?

A shaker is a tool designed to quickly chill, thoroughly mix, and properly dilute drinks. By shaking, the spirits, juices, and other ingredients reach the ideal temperature and texture faster. It’s one of the core tools in cocktail making.

What types of cocktails are best for shaking?

Cocktails that contain juices, syrups, egg whites, or cream are best for shaking. These are drinks that need a good, strong mix. Examples include Margarita and Whiskey Sour. Cocktails that are spirit‑forward and prized for a clear, silky texture, such as the Old Fashioned or Manhattan, are better suited for stirring, not shaking.

What’s the difference between a Boston shaker and a cobbler shaker?
  • A Boston shaker uses a two‑piece construction (tin‑on‑tin or tin‑on‑glass). It has a larger capacity, is flexible and reliable, is the professional’s first choice.
  • A cobbler shaker is a three‑piece build (body, built‑in strainer, and cap). It’s more intuitive and convenient to use, making it a good choice for beginners and home bartenders.
How many drinks can a shaker make at once?
  • A 28 oz (about 830 ml) Boston shaker can make 2–3 drinks at a time, like two Margaritas (about 4–5 oz each) or three Daiquiris (about 3–4 oz each).
  • A cobbler shaker has a smaller capacity, usually 24 oz (about 710 ml). We recommend making no more than two drinks at a time.

As a rule of thumb, don’t fill the shaker more than halfway. You need plenty of room for the ice to move around so you get perfect chilling and mixing.

Besides cocktails, what other drinks can a shaker make?

In addition to cocktails, a shaker is great for mocktails, iced coffee, mixed juice drinks, and more. Any drink that needs fast mixing, chilling, or emulsifying can usually be made with it.

How do I keep a shaker from getting stuck?

The key is not to force it when assembling. Align the pieces, then press lightly to seal — don’t lock it too tight. Also, don’t shake for too long. Around 15 seconds is usually enough. Over‑shaking and prolonged cold can make the shaker seal even tighter.

Are your shakers dishwasher safe?

Our 304 (18/8) stainless steel shakers are dishwasher‑safe and won't warp easily. However, to keep the mirror finish looking great for years, we recommend hand washing.
