What is a bar mat, and what is it used for?

A bar mat is a soft mat placed on a bar counter, used to catch spills and drips, keeping the workspace clean and dry. It also provides a stable, non-slip surface for glasses, cocktail shakers, and other tools, reducing the risk of chips and breakage. This makes it especially practical for home bars with marble or wooden countertops, where both protection and easy cleanup matter.

Why does a bar mat have raised dots on its surface?

The raised dots allow liquid to flow into the gaps between them, preventing tools from sitting directly in pooled liquid. They also increase friction, keeping glassware from sliding around. Additionally, the reduced contact area between the glass and the mat prevents suction, so glasses lift off easily without sticking to the surface.

What's the difference between a service mat and a rail mat?
  • A service mat is wider and larger, typically placed in the back-of-bar work area for bartenders. It provides a surface to organize bar tools and glassware while absorbing spills during the cocktail-making process.
  • A rail mat is narrow and elongated, placed along the front edge of the counter on the guest side. It catches condensation from glass bottoms and minor drips when drinks are served. Many commercial bars also have their logo printed on it for branding purposes.
How should a bar mat be cleaned?

After use, simply rinse the bar mat with water, or use a mild detergent to remove residues like alcohol, syrup, or juice. We recommend keeping it out of the dishwasher, as high heat can cause it to warp and shorten its lifespan.
